Samsung has confirmed it will reveal its new Galaxy S series smartphones – presumably the Galaxy S21 family – via an online event at the end of next week. The event will kick off at 10am ET on January 14, which converts to 2am AEDT on January 15 for anyone hoping to watch along from Australia.
Of course, there might not be much more for Samsung to showcase. We’ve already seen leaked renders of the entire S21 family – the Galaxy S21, the Galaxy S21+, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra (pictured above) – and have a pretty good idea of specs.
The entire Galaxy S21 family look pretty similar to the Galaxy S20 family, but only the Galaxy S21 Ultra features a curved display. The Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+ will return to a more traditional flat screen. The back is a different story, however. The three phones all have a camera bump that spills over the edge of the phone, as also featured in the event teaser video. It’s a clear shift from squared-off floating camera bumps we saw on the S20.
Interestingly, the Galaxy S21 may have a plastic back as with the Galaxy S20 FE, while only the Galaxy S21+ and Galaxy S21 Ultra will have a glass finish on the rear.
The Galaxy S21 Ultra is expected to support a Galaxy Note-esque S Pen, but it is unclear whether it will be bundled in the box. The fact Samsung is adding S Pen compatibility to the S21 Ultra could mean its curtains for the Note. The S21 Ultra won’t have anywhere to stash the S Pen within the device, but it is expected that select cases will have stylus slots.
