The upcoming iPhone 13 lineup isn’t expected to have many significant changes in its design since Apple made substantial changes to the iPhone 12 last year. Despite that, it seems that the new iPhone lineup will feature a few minor modifications compared to the current model.
More specifically, we should expect slightly thicker iPhones with much thicker camera bumps. Or at least that’s what a recent report based on schematics shared by MacRumors suggests.
The report goes on to say that the iPhone 13 models will have thicker bodies that’ll be barely noticeable for most users.
As of right now, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro feature a body that’s 7.4mm thick.
The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro would increase by 0.17mm, bringing it to a thickness of 7.57mm.
Moreover, the rumors suggest that the camera bumps will also be different. According to the schematics, the iPhone 13 lineup will feature a thicker camera bump which will be most noticeable on the Pro models.
While the standard iPhone 12 has a 1.5mm thick camera bump, the iPhone 13 will have a thicker 2.51mm camera bump on the back.
Likewise, the iPhone 13 Pro will have a 3.65mm thick camera bump, whereas the iPhone 12 Pro’s camera bump is only 1.7mm thick.
The thickness isn’t the only change. Reportedly, Apple will also change the overall size of the bump, changing it to around 29mm by 29mm on the iPhone 13 instead of the current 28mm by 30mm the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro have.
The iPhone 13 Pro, on the other hand, will also feature a larger bump which will measure 36mm by 37mm.
Why Will the iPhone 13 Have a Larger Bump?
Although making a thicker iPhone doesn’t seem like a great idea, there’s a good reason for it. Rumor has it the new iPhone 13 will come with many camera improvements, including better sensor-shift stabilization, which will improve the low-light performance and steadiness.
Although this feature is currently exclusive to the iPhone 12 Pro Max, it’s possible that Apple will add it across all iPhone 13 models, which would explain the larger camera bumps.
What Else Should We Expect from the iPhone 13?
Besides the camera bump changes, we can also expect Apple to bring the volume keys and the power button down lower than on the iPhone 12. Besides these differences, we shouldn’t expect other major design changes on the iPhone 13.
Other than that, rumors suggest the iPhone 13 could feature a ProMotion display and Touch ID in the side button. And while the iPhone 13 is likely to feature a notch, rumors suggest it’ll be smaller than the iPhone 12’s.
Although there isn’t any confirmation from Apple, we should expect the new iPhone 13 to be announced near the end of the year in September, October, or November.
