Apple iPhone 14 durability test leaves its mark on the Sapphire crystal camera lens cover as the device proves incredibly sturdy

DIY smartphone aficionado JerryRigEverything has performed some durability tests on the base iPhone 14. The device, which is the cheapest in the iPhone 14 lineup, proved to be as tough as they come and survived every scenario including the infamous bend test. Unfortunately, the Sapphire crystal rear lens covers didn’t perform quite as well as expected.

Apple iPhone 14 appears to be quite durable while also being slightly easier to repair than its predecessor as revealed by recent drop test and teardown videos. JerryRigEverything, famous for his smartphone durability tests, has now put the iPhone 14 through its paces in his signature scratch, burn, and bend tests.

Starting with the scratch test, the front of the iPhone 14 showed barely visible lines at level 6 and scratched at level 7 with deeper grooves at level 8 on the Mohs hardness scale. This score means that the Ceramic Shield glass protecting the display is better than normal tampered glass panels which scratch between 5 and 7.

Moving on, it appears Apple has used a low-quality Sapphire crystal for the rear cameras. Per the YouTuber, the lens covers scratched at level 6 with more severe scratches at levels 7 and 8. Ideally, Sapphire crystal should only start scratching at level 8/9. The YouTuber went on to say that the material of the lens covers scratches even easier than the Ceramic Shield front glass.

Next up, the iPhone 14 survived the famed JerryRigEverything burn test with the pixels going dead only after being exposed to the flame for longer than the reviewer’s normal time of 20 seconds. Additionally, the screen lost a lot of brightness during the test.

Finally, the bend test yielded no spectacular news as the device comfortably withstood the pressure from both the front and the back without giving in. So, unlike the iPhone 6 of years past, the iPhone 14 won’t bend no matter which pocket you put the phone into.

All in all, save the lens covers of the rear cameras, the iPhone 14 is super durable in all aspects as shown by JerryRigEverything. That said, it is wise to invest in a good tampered glass front protector and a good case as, at US$800, the phone doesn’t come cheap.
